Unleash your inner water lover!
Feel like drifting above the cool waters of the Dijle or the canal on a warm day? Enjoy a wonderfully relaxing paddle through the historic city centre of Mechelen — that’s all possible at The Gathering! Discover the beautiful city of Mechelen from the water together with your colleagues, friends, or family in a Canadian canoe. Ideal as a team-building activity or as a relaxed group outing. Schools and youth associations are, of course, more than welcome too!
Due to other activities already taking place on the Dijle in the city centre, The Gathering only organizes kayak and canoe trips on the Dijle departing from the Kruidtuin in Mechelen.
At the Zennegat or on the canal, we also offer stand-up paddleboarding. Here, you balance on a large, stable surfboard and paddle while standing upright with a long paddle. Good balance is definitely an advantage and might save you from an unexpected swim. But in summer, a little wobbling can provide that refreshing splash you might secretly enjoy! 😉
A relaxing trip on the water surrounded by historic buildings in the centre of Mechelen. The route is approximately 4 km long, starting from the pontoon in the Kruidtuin in Mechelen, right next to Via Via. From there, you paddle towards the marina at Rode Kruisplein in Mechelen and then head back. The full route takes about one and a half to two hours to complete.
Kayak or canoe - €15/person
Cars can be parked in the paid parking lot at Zandpoortvest. We gather at the terrace of Café ViaVia, which is already located in the Kruidtuin (Zandpoortvest 50, 2800 Mechelen). Of course, you can also come by bike or on foot, directly to the Kruidtuin.
If you bring spare clothes, we have small, practical changing tents available for you to get changed.
This is a peaceful trip through nature, starting at the lock of the Zennegat, which connects the canal to the Dijle. You paddle to the lock on the canal in Battel, about 3 km away. You’ll row back and forth between the two locks for a total of nearly 6 km. The full route takes about two to three hours to complete.
Kayak, canoe or SUP - €20/person
Cars can be parked in a small lot at the Zennegat (just enter “Zennegat” in Waze or Google Maps and you’ll find it), or, of course, you can also reach us by bike or on foot. From there, you’ll already see us on the opposite side of the canal. You can eagerly jump into the water and swim across, or take the bike bridge 10 meters away to reach the other side dry. :-)
If you bring spare clothes, we have small, practical changing tents available for you.
For those who want to really loosen up their arms and shoulders, we have the route between the bridge at Schiplaken and the lock at Battel — and back. Perfect for a 16 km full-arm workout! :-)
The round trip takes about 5 hours to complete.
Kajak, kano of SUP - €30/persoon
Cars can be parked at The Gathering in Schiplaken (The Gathering Boortmeerbeek, Molenheidebaan 23), or, of course, you can also reach us by bike or on foot. From there, it’s a 500-meter walk to the canal.
You can change clothes at The Gathering if needed.
